Menopausal bruising is so common! For me, this first happened when I caught my hand on a table in a restaurant, and the result the next day looked horrendous! Yes, it hurt a bit at the time but NOTHING like the bruising I had on the whole of my arm the next morning! I seemed to be covered in bruises a lot of the time and often had no idea where they had come from!

I had realized how clumsy I had become, but often put that down to my joint problems, I certainly had never been a clumsy person before, but walking into a door frame and misjudging where doors, cupboards and handles were, became a regular occurrence. I did not think much about it really until a few friends commented, and said they too had some huge bruises and had no idea as to why.
After looking into this (and actually feeling better about it after I had) I will let you into a few obvious but not so obvious reasons that I found!
Menopausal Bruising
Apparently, its all down to the falling of Oestrogen and Progesterone levels in the body. Often these two combined losses can cause a huge lack of concentration and make you feel giddy or have dizzy spells. Your lack of ability to judge distances and becoming more accident prone, are often caused by the diminishing of these hormones, and in some cases, minor car accidents and bangs due to lack of judgment and concentration can happen!
I never knew that falling Oestrogen levels could also affect your eyesight, so remember ladies to have regular eye tests, especially if you are beginning to squint more and can’t see what you used to be able too!
As we get older our skin naturally begins to thin but as the Oestrogen levels drop this can get worse, so we don’t have enough cushioning to protect us from those knocks and bumps, hence the huge bruises!
I am told it is all about balancing your hormones! Regular exercise is important as our bones can become weaker during this time, Yoga and Pilates are very good and help with balance. This is a major problem for some women as bad balance can cause them to trip and fall, and often is the reason the elderly are severely injured when they fall, mainly caused because of their inability to balance. I have recently started taking Optibac’s probiotics for many of my menopausal symptoms and so far I can’t recommend them highly enough! Click here to view the supplements that I have been taking!
Drinking lots of water is good for concentration, staying hydrated is so important for many issues caused by the Menopause and can aid with getting rid of headaches and feeling dizzy. I recommend getting a water bottle with times down the side, so that it is easier to track how much water you have had to drink that day. I use this water bottle from Amazon.
Being clumsy is not your fault and stress can also make you more prone to knocking things over and spilling things, it’s a bit of a viscous circle, as the more you worry about being clumsy the more stressed you become. It is one of the side effects of the Menopause that should diminish as time goes by.
Some supplements can help with bruising, one friend of mine swears by Arnica, she says it stops her from bruising as badly. Vitamin A and C, and Bromelein (which is found in Pineapples) can help with healing too. My friend gets her Vitamin C tablets from Natures best!
If you bruise easily it is also worth following these steps, apply pressure straight away, Ice the area now and then, you can always use a light covering of makeup if necessary.
So lets all take a little bit more care and keep a look out for those open draws, dishwashers, tables and anything else we are likely to walk into! If you have a lot of increased bruising, seek advice from your GP to rule out anything that could be more sinister.
